Introduction to Electrical Cabling

Updated: Nov 2, 2022

Electricity Cabling is the foundation of any running business. This is why a reliable Electric Cable contractor is paramount. The need for electricity has given rise to the need for a structured cabling system to ensure the smooth flow of electricity. Here are a few fundamentals to consider when installing electric cabling!

  • Wire Sizing

    • The size of a wire relates to the wire’s capacity to carry currents, or how much it can safely handle. Choosing the right one is important as it serves as the perimeter of what function it can serve. A bad match would spike the risk of short circuit and fire.

  • Electrical Wire Colour Coding

    • You’ll be able to find colour coding on both the outer sheathing of the wires and on individual conduction wires within cables or inside conduit. Understanding the colours will aid in identifying wire function and provide a systematic approach.

    • Colouring on the wires does not indicate size or rating but rather the advised use of it. For example, green wires generally indicate that it is used for grounding. White wires are grounded “neutral” conductors. While black and red wires are used for current-carrying “hot” connections.

  • Maximum Number of Wires Allowed in Conduit

    • “Fill capacity” is the term used to describe a maximum number of allowable wires. Size of the conduit, gauge of the wires and the material are some factors that affect the fill capacity. Therefore, even if they are of the same size, a metal conduit and a plastic conduit would definitely vary in capacity.

While the above is good to know, don’t worry too much about it – in our arsenal here at Keydence, we have a dedicated team of professional technicians who are masters of their craft, equipped with the knowledge and expertise for safe and reliable cabling work.

5 Things You’ve Never Heard about Electrical Cabling

Wires can be seen practically everywhere around us, seated at your desk right now? Look around, can you see how many cable or wire sources are in front of you? These cables are important as they transport electricity for machines to provide internet, communication and data exchange on a daily basis.

Here are 3 things you might want to take note of before making a purchase:

#1 If installed in the wrong way, it will not last long

You can purchase the most expensive type of electrical cable however if it is not installed properly by the technician it might not last for long as the extent to which a cable lasts heavily relies on the manner in which the installation is done.

#2 The cable armor is not used to protect the electrical cable from moisture

It is a common misconception that the armour is used to protect the cable from water. Exposing the cables to water may easily lead to the destruction of the armour and it may lead to the exposure of the cable over time. Hence, it is important to install electric cables away from water, even if they are armoured.

#3 Cable armor is not used to protect the cable against possible physical impacts

Wear and tear is common in cables and the armour only protects the cable to a certain extent therefore you must avoid putting weigh on these cables like stepping on them.

This is because the cable armor used on all types of cables is usually made up of steel tape or steel wire. These materials are expected to increase the tensile measure of the electrical cables and not to protect the cables from physical impact.
